Program overview

UBC Sauder School of Business LIFT: Kenya (formerly Sauder Social Entrepreneurship Kenya) is a student-led four-week business skills training course in Nairobi, Kenya. UBC Sauder LIFT supports underprivileged youth in the regions of Kibera and Mathare.

At its core, UBC Sauder LIFT represents: Leadership, Innovation, Fundamentals and Training. The mission of UBC Sauder LIFT is to provide participants with business tools and knowledge necessary to improve their lives and their communities. In the long-term, the training received from UBC Sauder LIFT plays a crucial role in reducing the high unemployment rate i n Kibera and Mathare.

The program provides a great opportunity for UBC students to learn about other cultures, how businesses are created and developed in different contexts, and the role of education in fostering economic development.

Kibera

Kibera is one of the most studied areas in Africa with an estimated population of over 1-million people in just 2.5 square km.

Mathare is home to approximately 500,000 people in an area of only three square miles. It is one of the oldest and most disadvantaged communities in Kenya.”

Program structure

The goal of UBC Sauder LIFT: Kenya is to fuel entrepreneurship, as participants create or improve their own ventures. The curriculum is foundational in nature and entrepreneurial in spirit. Using the Business Model Canvas as a template, UBC Sauder LIFT focuses on three pillars: financial management, marketing, and strategy.
